Louis Poulsen. Design that shapes light.

Louis Poulsen has stood for Danish lighting culture since 1874: luminaires conceived not as objects but from the light itself. The collaboration with Poul Henningsen from the 1920s onwards produced the famous multi-shade principle for glare-free, soft light. Classics such as PH 5, PH Artichoke and the AJ series shape rooms around the world to this day.

The brand

What Louis Poulsen stands for.

Louis Poulsen was founded in Copenhagen in 1874 and grew from a trading house into Scandinavia’s most important luminaire manufacturer. The turning point came with the collaboration with Poul Henningsen from the mid-1920s: his scientifically developed multi-shade system directs light so that it falls into the room softly and without glare – the birth of the PH lamps.

From this attitude – “Design to Shape Light” – came icons of the 20th century: the PH 5 and the PH Artichoke (both 1958), the AJ series by Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and Verner Panton’s Panthella of 1971. All are still in production today and carefully evolved, for instance as battery-powered Portable versions.

In lighting design, Louis Poulsen is the reference for atmospheric, human-centred light – from living spaces to restaurants and outdoor lighting.

Design

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) is considered the first lighting designer of the modern age; his three-shade principle of 1925/26 remains the basis of the PH series to this day. Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamps in 1957–1960 as part of his total work of art, the SAS Royal Hotel; Verner Panton added the Panthella in 1971 – one of the most distinctive mushroom lamps in design.
