Ingo Maurer. Poetry made of light bulbs and paper.
In 1966, Ingo Maurer (1932–2019) founded his studio “Design M” in Munich – the beginning of a unique body of work between design, art and invention. Icons such as Bulb, Lucellino and Zettel’z are still made in Munich today, largely by hand.
What Ingo Maurer stands for.
Ingo Maurer founded his studio in Munich in 1966 under the name “Design M” – since 1970 the house has resided on Kaiserstraße in Schwabing. His first design, the oversized light bulb Bulb, became an instant icon and set the course: light as poetry, with wit, lightness and technical curiosity.
Designs that wrote design history followed: the low-voltage cable system YaYaHo (1984), the winged light bulb Lucellino (1992), the exploding porcelain chandelier Porca Miseria! (1994) and the paper light Zettel’z (1997), whose sheets anyone can inscribe themselves.
Since Ingo Maurer’s death in October 2019, his team of around fifty has carried the work forward – development, production and assembly still take place in Munich. Since 2022 the house has been majority-owned by the Italian Foscarini group, which preserves the brand’s independence.
Ingo Maurer (1932–2019), a trained typographer and graphic artist from Lake Constance, became world-famous as the “poet of light” – his works are held in the collections of major museums.
His Munich studio of more than 50 people carries development, one-off commissions and lighting design forward in his spirit.
