Michael Anastassiades. The poetry of reduction.
Michael Anastassiades is considered one of the most influential lighting designers of our time. From his London studio, the Cyprus-born designer has been creating luminaires of utmost reduction since 1994 – objects that hover between sculpture and everyday utility.
What Michael Anastassiades stands for.
Michael Anastassiades studied civil engineering at Imperial College and industrial design at the Royal College of Art before founding his studio in London in 1994. His work seeks the balance between improvisation and structure, control and intuition – distilled into forms of timeless clarity.
He rose to fame with the Mobile Chandeliers: poised compositions of rods and spheres reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s mobiles. For Flos he designed icons such as the IC Lights and the String Lights; further collaborations link him with B&B Italia, Herman Miller, Cassina and Bang & Olufsen.
His objects carry no protective coatings – brass is allowed to oxidise, patina is part of the design. Works by Anastassiades are held in the collections of MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Michael Anastassiades designs every luminaire himself. Born in Cyprus and at home in London, he has been honoured as a Royal Designer for Industry and teaches at leading design schools. Alongside the serial collections, his studio produces limited editions for galleries such as Nilufar in Milan.
