Flos. Icons of Italian light.
Founded in Merano in 1962, Flos has shaped the history of Italian lighting design like few other brands. From the icons of the Castiglioni brothers to designs by Michael Anastassiades and Philippe Starck, Flos unites technology with poetry.
What Flos stands for.
Flos was founded in Merano in 1962 by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina – the name is the Latin word for blossom, chosen by Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. It began with experiments in the cocoon technique, a sprayable resin applied over metal frames, from which early classics such as Viscontea and Taraxacum emerged. Under Sergio Gandini, the company grew into a global brand in the Brescia region.
The collaboration with Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni as well as Tobia Scarpa produced designs that now stand in design museums: the Arco floor lamp, the Taccia table lamp and the Parentesi by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù.
Flos continues this line with the defining designers of the present – among them Michael Anastassiades (IC Lights, String Light), Marcel Wanders (Skygarden), Jasper Morrison (Glo-Ball), Philippe Starck, Konstantin Grcic and Barber & Osgerby (Bellhop). In parallel, Flos Architectural develops professional lighting systems for the contract sector.
The legacy of the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni shapes Flos to this day: designs such as Arco, Taccia and Snoopy combine technical intelligence with wit and elegance – and have been in production for more than sixty years.
Today, designers such as Michael Anastassiades, Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic and Formafantasma continue to write the brand's design history.
