Catellani & Smith. Light, shaped by hand.
Since 1989, Enzo Catellani has been making luminaires in Villa di Serio near Bergamo that hover between art object and light source. Each piece is made by hand – from the gold-leafed reflector to the sphere of woven aluminium wire.
What Catellani & Smith stands for.
Catellani & Smith was founded in 1989 by Enzo Catellani in Villa di Serio near Bergamo – the “Smith” in the name, incidentally, was his horse at the time, Logan Smith. The small workshop on the river Serio has grown into a manufactory whose luminaires are still made by hand in Italy today.
With the “Luci d’Oro” collection (1995) and its gold-leafed reflectors, the house found its unmistakable language. It was followed by Lucenera (2000), awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 2001, the iconic wire sphere Fil de Fer – made in a limited series from 2002 – and Lederam (2013), which pairs LED technology with wafer-thin metal discs.
Whether as a single object or as an expansive installation for hotels and restaurants: the luminaires of Catellani & Smith are less products than poetic works – each one slightly different, because hands have shaped them.
Enzo Catellani founded the house in 1989 and still designs its luminaires himself – born of experiments with material and light, often directly in the workshop rather than at the drawing board.
His credo: “beautiful” is subjective – what matters is that an object moves you. He leaves perfection to industry, and character to the hands of his manufactory.
